The Plague Column was erected in Horní (Upper) Square between a church and the town hall in 1719, as Prince Josef of Liechtenstein commissioned it to give thanks for the town´s rescue from a plague which affected the whole of Moravia. Šternberk was miraculously spared. Its citizens, headed by Patrik Vavřinec Lehmann, Provost of the monastery, ordered the column probably from sculptor Jan Sturmer of Olomouc. At the turn of the first two decades of the 18th century his workshop was very popular. He supplied plague columns also to other Liechtenstein demesnes, e.g. Moravská Třebová.
