The large Malthouse built in the 1860s was in operation till 1973. In the last decade, a part of it was converted into an art gallery. It also houses the tourist information centre, and further premises are being prepared for their opening to the public.

The foundation stone of the Písek Malthouse was laid on 5 July 1862, with the purpose to produce malt for the Písek and later on also the Protivín breweries, and this production lasted until 1973. In 1995, the disused building was taken over by the Písek Municipality which started its gradual renovation. In June 2009, two permanent expositions were opened in it - one presenting graphic artist Radek Pilař, native of Písek, i.a. author of the representation of Cipísek, a highwayman´s little son created by writer Václav Čtvrtek, the other documenting the development of illustration of books for children. Now the Malthouse is a lively cultural place where children and adults play and create together. Large interactive exhibitions for whole families are held in it, and fringe events related to them give variety to the cultural offer. The courtyard with a fountain  contributes to the visitors´ feeling of wellbeing.
