Royal Castle

Velké náměstí 114
Písek, 397 01

The surviving wing of the former royal castle in Písek today houses the Museum of Prácheň Region.

The Písek Castle is an important specimen of Czech castle architecture. It was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century by members of the Písek-Zvíkov construction workshop for Czech King Přemysl Otakar II, who personally supervised the work. It stood on the edge of the town, and was designed magnanimously indeed.  The not-too-large courtyard was encircled by four arcaded wings with three defence towers, the premises serving social functions, including a chapel and two large halls, were situated on the first floor. The Municipality purchased it in 1509, but in the subsequent centuries it was devastated - reconstructions and demolitions have prevented us from admiring the original castle, which lost all its towers and three wings. The only survivor is the western wing above the Otava river, with a large Gothic hall adorned with copies of frescos dating from 1479. Today the complex of the former castle houses the Museum of Prácheň Region, founded in 1884, which offers extensive collections documenting the area´s history and nature. In appreciation of the exposition which annually attracts tens of thousands of visitors, it was awarded the title 1996 European Museum by the Council of Europe.
