Founded during the rule of Přemysl Otakar I (1197-1230), the castle became an important frontier fortress. Charles IV often stayed in it and favoured it with many privileges. According to legend, when hunting he found curative hot springs in the surrounding forests, and founded a town later on named Karlovy Vary. Extensively reconstructed in the 15th century, passing into the possession of the Šliks and converted into splendid residence. In the 16th century the castle together with manorial court passed into the ownership of Loket municipality, at the end of 18th century was converted into a prison and served this purpose till 1948. Exposition of historic porcelain was opened in it at the end of 20th century, exposition on torture was installed in 2004. Open to the public since 1993.
