The East Bohemian Theatre is a prestigious cultural institution with importance reaching beyond the regional borders (eg holding the Grand Festival of Laughter). It was built to the design by architect Antonín Balšánek in 1909. The front is decorated with the Statue of Genius by Bohumil Kafka. In 1931 the interiors were devastated by an extensive fire. Prominent figures at the theatre included many talented actors, in November 1989 it was a centre of political developments in the region. Extensive repairs of the interior and exterior of the building were carried out in 2002-2003.
