František Xaver Šalda Theatre - Liberec

nám. Dr. E. Beneše 22
Liberec, 460 01

One of the oldest theatres in the country, its history goes back to 1883. In 1879, the old Soukenické (Cloth-Makers´) Theatre was devastated by fire, the cause of which was unknown. The building had been regarded as substandard for quite some time by then, and the fire speeded up the construction of a new one. For this purpose a society was founded in 1875. The well-known firm of Viennesse architects Fellner and Helmer was commissioned with the implementation of the project, and the new theatre was officially opened in 1883. The neo-Renaissance exterior is decorated with columns, pilasters, statues of the Muses and goddesses, the interior is modelled in neo-Baroque style. The highlight is the curtain, the work of Gustav Klimt and his pupils. The theatre is visited by spectators from Liberec and the whole region, it has currently three professional ensembles - drama, opera and ballet.
